Sofia Coppola: Vogue Australia August 2013

Vogue Australia chose to feature Sofia Coppola on the cover for their August "Love Issue," as well as inside, in the editorial "The Sofia Factor." The feminine collection that Marc Jacobs showed for Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter 2013 brought to mind lounging with the abundance of slip dresses and pajamas. It is no surprise to see Sofia relaxing in many of the pieces from this collection for the editorial including the dress that she wears in the cover shot. Photographed by Paul Jasmin at Chateau Marmont in Los Angeles, "The Sofia Factor" was styled by Stacey Battat, a former designer for Marc Jacobs also known as the woman tasked with handling one of the major stars of The Bling Ring — the costumes. In the interview with Natasha Fraser-Cavassoni, Sofia discusses her family, her relationship with Marc Jacobs, and her love of chocolate sashimi, among other topics.

Sofia Coppola, Fashion Icon

I am excited to introduce today's guest post, "Sofia Coppola, Fashion Icon," by Francesca Keller. Based in Buenos Aires, Francesca's adorable blog is titled La Dolce Moda and she often finds inspiration in the work and the style of Sofia Coppola. It is a pleasure to feature her work on these pages and I hope you will all enjoy it. Thank you kindly for your stellar contribution to IWTBAC, Francesca!

Sofia Coppola, Fashion Icon
By Francesca Keller

From being Karl Lagerfeld’s coffee-fetching intern to rubbing elbows with the fashion elite to designing a purse named after her, Sofia Coppola is — and will always be — a fashion icon. Her sense of style is evident in her fashion-filled films like Marie Antoinette and now, The Bling Ring.

Sofia Coppola has directed five films, with The Virgin Suicides being her masterful cinematic debut. The third film she directed is Marie Antoinette (2006). First of all, I feel I must mention that I consider Marie Antoinette to be an incredibly underappreciated film. I still cannot grasp the fact that it was booed at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival. The film focuses on Marie Antoinette’s own coming-of-age story and the many struggles she faced, from her journey as a 14-year-old young child readying to marry a prince, to being crowned as the 19-year-old queen of France.

To those who have seen the film (everyone, I hope) it is no surprise that Marie Antoinette is one of my favorites, since it most definitely is a fashion-filled feast for the eyes. Each gown shows an extremely large amount of work and astoundingly thorough detail to the last stitch and bow. The fabrics used are also amazing, varying among silk, satin, taffeta, and lace, each with a unique pattern or embroidery. Most importantly, Coppola’s masterpiece was nominated for — and won —  the Best Costume Design Academy Award. Milena Canonero, the costume designer for the film, ‘These are the colors I love’, I used them as a palette.” Thus we all officially know where all the fashion in the film started: with beautiful pastel-colored Parisian macaroons.

Moreover, Coppola’s latest cinematic masterpiece is the new movie The Bling Ring, which is based on the Hollywood Hills robberies in 2008 and 2009 by celebrity-obsessed teenagers. Because it is set in Los Angeles (and its clear focus on celebrity life and Hollywood), one can say it has similar aspects to Sofia Coppola's fourth film Somewhere (2010). As The New Yorker wrote about the fashion-obsessed Bling Ring-ers: “They have a rather extraordinary fund of knowledge: they can identify, at a glance, a Birkin bag, Alexander McQueen sunglasses, a Balmain dress — and who wears them. They live in a world at the intersection of high fashion and celebrity.” Clearly, the film is filled with fashion, and one even gets a glimpse of Paris Hilton’s immensely large and designer-full closet.

Although, the film’s fashion-filled status did not come easily. Coppola talked to WWD about how hard it was for her to get fashion brands to lend their clothes for this particular film, she said, "I think it's not the ideal way they want to be portrayed. Louis Vuitton is this brand based on heritage and great craftsmanship, and that wasn't the side that we were celebrating… The kids in the story are more interested in the bling aspect, kind of the status of those brands." Thankfully they did ultimately agree, because every fashion loving person would accede to being associated with Sofia Coppola’s work.

Finally, not only is Sofia Coppola surrounded by fashion, but also she is a fashion icon herself. A little known fact is that she started her own fashion label in 1994 after leaving Mills College. The brand is called Milkfed (and it is still available online). Coppola says her love of fashion started when she interned at Chanel as a teenager: “It was so exciting to go to Paris in the Eighties at the height of Chanel. I was in the design studio so I got to see Karl Lagerfeld doing haute couture sketches for the final shows, it was incredible — he is so creative. I was getting coffee and doing intern stuff but just to be around him was amazing."

Sofia Coppola has a gorgeous elegant personal style, most times opting for a simple, classic ensemble: tailored suits, floral dresses... the woman does everything right! She is close friends with the designer Marc Jacobs and even collaborated with him to create one of the ultimate Louis Vuitton bags: the Sofia Coppola. The SC bag is known for being extremely chic and perfect for everyday use in neutral colors. Famous fashionistas like Emmanuelle Alt, Garance Doré, Alexa Chung, Kate Moss, and Miranda Kerr have all loved the bag.

Sofia Coppola: Premiere Looks

Inspired by the elegant looks that director Sofia Coppola chose when facing the red carpet for The Bling Ring in Cannes, Los Angeles, and New York, I thought it would be fun to flashback on Sofia's sartorial decisions for her various film premieres over the years. Which is your favorite look?

The Virgin Suicides, Los Angeles Premiere

For the premiere of her first film, The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola opts for an orange and purple plaid dress gathered at the bodice and flowing nearly to her ankles. She gives the look her trademark simplicity, limiting her accessories to black suede mules and a necklace, I believe it is the star diamond pendant designed by Marc Jacobs in 1996. I really like Sofia's makeup here, this red lipstick suits her perfectly.

Lost in Translation, Venice Film Festival

I love that Sofia Coppola chooses an ultrafeminine approach for the Venice Film Festival screening of Lost in Translation, she looks gorgeous. The ladylike ruffles and the demure bodice of her little black dress accent her figure in all the right places. Sofia completes the look with her impeccable taste: glamorous diamond stud earrings, a dainty handbag, and sophisticated shoes, bellissima!

Lost in Translation, New York Premiere

Sofia Coppola is the epitome in casual chic for the New York premiere of Lost in Translation, sporting a black tank layered on top of a navy one, a black skirt, and black Repetto ballerines. I think she is wearing the Marc Jacobs pendant again with a silver ring and black leather bracelet. Notice that Sofia rarely varies her minimal makeup for her premieres, keeping the focus on the red lip. Scarlett Johansson looks equally stunning (as well as Sofia's total opposite!).

Marie Antoinette, Cannes Film Festival

Striking just the right note of sophistication for the premiere of her Marie Antoinette at Cannes, Sofia Coppola keeps it modern, cinching her black strapless lace dress by Givenchy with a sleek belt. She adds a diamond link bracelet, a black clutch, and the perfect black sandals to give edge to a dress that could be too fussy in the wrong hands. Total Sofia style, fantastique.

Somewhere, Venice Film Festival

The elegant look that Sofia Coppola picked for the premiere of Somewhere at the Venice Film Festival is one of my favorites, and inspired the illustration by Hogan McLaughlin on the IWTBAC banner. Sofia wears a little black dress from the Louis Vuitton 2011 Resort collection with a pert collar and a sheer bodice, accented with a thin black patent leather belt, black Louis Vuitton Syracusa wedges, and the same diamond link bracelet seen at the Marie Antoinette premiere. The perfect finishing touch is her Louis Vuitton SC Slim Clutch in black alligator, talk about the woman that has it all…

Somewhere, Los Angeles Premiere

Sofia Coppola plays up her understated glamour at the Somewhere premiere in Los Angeles, wearing a black sequin dress by Louis Vuitton with no jewelry; she needs only black wedges and the Louis Vuitton SC Slim Clutch in black alligator to complement the bling of the dress. If you are inspired by Sofia's makeup for the event, view the video "The Sofia Coppola Look: Somewhere Premiere" by contributing editor Renee Hernandez to learn how to do it yourself.

Somewhere, Paris Premiere

For the Parisian premiere of Somewhere, Sofia Coppola works the garçon chic look in a marinière striped in navy blue and red atop an untucked white tee, slim black denim jeans, a wristwatch with black leather strap, and a diamond tennis bracelet. Her hair and makeup seem exactly as they would if she were wearing a haute couture gown.

Somewhere, Tokyo Premiere

I love the texture of Sofia Coppola's look for the premiere of Somewhere in Tokyo, a fuzzy blue dress with leather epaulettes based on the Louis Vuitton Pre-Fall 2011 collection. Sofia makes the unusual dress her own with a black leather belt tied obi style, black wedges by Céline, her trusty LV SC Slim Clutch in black alligator, and a diamond tennis bracelet.

Somewhere, New York Premiere

Sofia Coppola reprises the sequins when Somewhere premieres in New York, this time limiting the shine to a black vest worn over a white tank top with fitted black pants for casual elegance; the Verdura cuff and Céline wedges finish the look. Sofia's glamour is reflected by golden girl Elle Fanning at her side.
