Sofia Coppola: Premiere Looks

Inspired by the elegant looks that director Sofia Coppola chose when facing the red carpet for The Bling Ring in Cannes, Los Angeles, and New York, I thought it would be fun to flashback on Sofia's sartorial decisions for her various film premieres over the years. Which is your favorite look?

The Virgin Suicides, Los Angeles Premiere

For the premiere of her first film, The Virgin Suicides, Sofia Coppola opts for an orange and purple plaid dress gathered at the bodice and flowing nearly to her ankles. She gives the look her trademark simplicity, limiting her accessories to black suede mules and a necklace, I believe it is the star diamond pendant designed by Marc Jacobs in 1996. I really like Sofia's makeup here, this red lipstick suits her perfectly.

Lost in Translation, Venice Film Festival

I love that Sofia Coppola chooses an ultrafeminine approach for the Venice Film Festival screening of Lost in Translation, she looks gorgeous. The ladylike ruffles and the demure bodice of her little black dress accent her figure in all the right places. Sofia completes the look with her impeccable taste: glamorous diamond stud earrings, a dainty handbag, and sophisticated shoes, bellissima!

Lost in Translation, New York Premiere

Sofia Coppola is the epitome in casual chic for the New York premiere of Lost in Translation, sporting a black tank layered on top of a navy one, a black skirt, and black Repetto ballerines. I think she is wearing the Marc Jacobs pendant again with a silver ring and black leather bracelet. Notice that Sofia rarely varies her minimal makeup for her premieres, keeping the focus on the red lip. Scarlett Johansson looks equally stunning (as well as Sofia's total opposite!).

Marie Antoinette, Cannes Film Festival

Striking just the right note of sophistication for the premiere of her Marie Antoinette at Cannes, Sofia Coppola keeps it modern, cinching her black strapless lace dress by Givenchy with a sleek belt. She adds a diamond link bracelet, a black clutch, and the perfect black sandals to give edge to a dress that could be too fussy in the wrong hands. Total Sofia style, fantastique.

Somewhere, Venice Film Festival

The elegant look that Sofia Coppola picked for the premiere of Somewhere at the Venice Film Festival is one of my favorites, and inspired the illustration by Hogan McLaughlin on the IWTBAC banner. Sofia wears a little black dress from the Louis Vuitton 2011 Resort collection with a pert collar and a sheer bodice, accented with a thin black patent leather belt, black Louis Vuitton Syracusa wedges, and the same diamond link bracelet seen at the Marie Antoinette premiere. The perfect finishing touch is her Louis Vuitton SC Slim Clutch in black alligator, talk about the woman that has it all…

Somewhere, Los Angeles Premiere

Sofia Coppola plays up her understated glamour at the Somewhere premiere in Los Angeles, wearing a black sequin dress by Louis Vuitton with no jewelry; she needs only black wedges and the Louis Vuitton SC Slim Clutch in black alligator to complement the bling of the dress. If you are inspired by Sofia's makeup for the event, view the video "The Sofia Coppola Look: Somewhere Premiere" by contributing editor Renee Hernandez to learn how to do it yourself.

Somewhere, Paris Premiere

For the Parisian premiere of Somewhere, Sofia Coppola works the garçon chic look in a marinière striped in navy blue and red atop an untucked white tee, slim black denim jeans, a wristwatch with black leather strap, and a diamond tennis bracelet. Her hair and makeup seem exactly as they would if she were wearing a haute couture gown.

Somewhere, Tokyo Premiere

I love the texture of Sofia Coppola's look for the premiere of Somewhere in Tokyo, a fuzzy blue dress with leather epaulettes based on the Louis Vuitton Pre-Fall 2011 collection. Sofia makes the unusual dress her own with a black leather belt tied obi style, black wedges by Céline, her trusty LV SC Slim Clutch in black alligator, and a diamond tennis bracelet.

Somewhere, New York Premiere

Sofia Coppola reprises the sequins when Somewhere premieres in New York, this time limiting the shine to a black vest worn over a white tank top with fitted black pants for casual elegance; the Verdura cuff and Céline wedges finish the look. Sofia's glamour is reflected by golden girl Elle Fanning at her side.
