The Sofia Coppola Look: Somewhere Premiere

It is a thrill and an honor to present the first official IWTB video — The Sofia Coppola Look: Somewhere Premiere! Our talented contributing editor Renee Hernandez takes a close look at the makeup worn by Sofia Coppola for the premiere of her film Somewhere and shares with us her step-by-step guide to recreating Sofia's natural yet glamorous look.

The Sofia Coppola Look: Somewhere Premiere
By Renee Hernandez

The perfect makeup look for a woman should be one that suits her perfectly. One where her inner beauty is reflected outwards. I think Sofia Coppola perfectly captures this philosophy. What I admire most about her makeup technique is how she stays true to her natural beauty and only uses makeup to enhance it.

For the Los Angeles premiere of 2010’s Somewhere, the director amped up the glam factor with a shimmering bronze, beautiful, natural makeup look. The natural look never goes out of style and because of the soft neutral shades and shimmering bronze eyeshadow it transitions easily from day to night.

Check out this step-by-step guide inspired by Sofia’s red carpet makeup look:

Fresh and Clean
The first step is a clean and well moisturized face. Begin by washing the face with your favorite cleanser. If you like, use a washcloth to gently exfoliate your skin. Immediately apply your favorite moisturizer to soothe and hydrate your skin.

Bronze Beauty
For the eyes we’re going to layer colors for a sort of ombre effect. To prevent your eyeshadow from creasing use a smudge proof cream eyeshadow as a base. With your fingertips, apply a taupe or beige color over your eye until you reach the crease. It doesn’t have to be perfect because we’re going to layer another color.

Blend
Using a slightly pointed blending brush, sweep a shimmering bronze eyeshadow across the lid and up to the crease. Finally, take a larger blending brush and blend at the crease.

The Bottom Line
For added drama, line your waterline with a brown kohl eyeliner. Sofia uses Origins Automagically Eye Lining Pencil. Bring the same bronze color underneath the bottom lashes using a small blending brush. Use short feathering strokes making sure you wrap around the entire eye.

The Golden Touch
With a fluffy brush, apply a loose gold eyeshadow near the tear duct area. The gold will really make the eyes pop.

Flawless Complexion
We want to create a flawless and natural-looking finish. Use your favorite foundation or concealer to cover any blemishes and even skin tone. Apply with your fingertips or a foundation brush.

Quick Contour
Dust a bronzer along your cheekbones for subtle sculpting. Using a contour brush, sweep in a diagonal motion.

Natural Glow
For that fresh bloom look use a powder blush in either rose or pink. With a light hand, sweep color onto the apples of the cheeks using a medium size brush.

Brighten Up
To brighten and open up the face, blend an illuminating highlighter along your cheekbones, forehead, nose, brow bone, and chin.

Define Brows
With a groomer brush, comb the hair down and then fill in brow with an angled brush using light, feathering strokes. Lastly, comb brows upward.

A Touch of Mascara
To complete the eye look, finish off with a dark brown mascara. Sofia's favorite mascara is Clinique Lash Power. Grab at the root, move from side to side, and then drag up. Add multiple coats and repeat on lower lashes.

Lustrous Lips
For the lips, apply a pink or berry colored lipstick with a brush, starting in the center of your upper lip. Work outward, following the contour of your mouth. Add an extra sheen with clear lipgloss. One berry hue that Sofia prefers is NARS Lipstick in Dolce Vita; she also likes Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey.

Et voilà, a natural and elegant look with sultry eyes that's red carpet ready à la Sofia Coppola.

This is wonderful and everything, but eyes first? !?!! You should always start with the base for your make up; primer, foundation, concealer (well concealers a bit iffy you can choose really, but certainly under the eyes first). You're only going to ruin your eyes if you do them first, so messy!!!
