I Want To Be A Coppola Contest

On 8 February, the latest film directed by Roman Coppola opens in select theaters, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III. A playful comedy with an outstanding cast, the film stars Charlie Sheen, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Aubrey Plaza, and Patricia Arquette. In honor of the release, I am delighted to offer readers the opportunity to win a prize. Write an essay or create an illustration inspired by your favorite Coppola film and submit your entry in our contest for your chance to win. The prize includes a t-shirt (pictured below) designed by Charlie White III, the graphic designer whose work inspired the character that Sheen plays in the film, as well as a teaser poster for the movie. Roman Coppola: A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles Swan III

Last week the Coppola family turned out for the New York premiere of Roman Coppola's latest film, A Glimpse Inside The Mind Of Charles Swan III. Written, directed, and produced by Roman Coppola, the film is set in the 1970s and stars Charlie Sheen as a ladies' man who has just been dumped, along with Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Patricia Arquette, and Katheryn Winnick. Among the guests on hand to celebrate the premiere of the movie with Roman Coppola were his sister, Sofia Coppola, his parents, Francis Ford Coppola and Eleanor Coppola, his cousin and cast member, Jason Schwartzman, Olivier Theyskens, Kim Gordon, Jennifer Furches, Anna Sui, Kelly Rutherford, Alexa Chung, Fred Armisen, Jennifer Creel, Sean Lennon, Jonathan Ames, and Yigal Azrouel with the fun continuing at Hotel Chantelle for the afterparty. A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III releases in American theatres on 8 February.

Sofia Coppola: Sofia

Remember when Sofia Coppola served as guest editor for the December 2004/January 2005 issue of Vogue Paris? Her knack for creating beautiful films extends to magazines as well and I always love looking back at this issue, especially the brilliant review of the contents by our editor-at-large, Dara Block. One of my favorite parts of this iconic issue is the editorial featured here, "Sofia," as styled by Carine Roitfeld and photographed by Mario Testino. This is one sexy Sofia! I admire her poise in playing whatever role Carine comes up with, in this instance, a sultry siren, and her hair looks fabulous in this starlet style. Carine reflects on their collaboration: “She was a natural. She could replace me tomorrow. She’s got the right eye. She’s energetic, she’s gifted and she’s got taste… Sofia’s of our generation. We share the same references. She’s in the heart of film and fashion and she knows music. And then she was very involved in everything. She really got into it. She got hair extensions and she even posed [semi-] nude."

Kirsten Dunst non è certo una di quelle star che ti vengono in mente quando si parla di bellezza, glamour o moda. Essa incarna piuttosto un ideale di bellezza più simile a quello della ragazza della porta accanto. Raramente rimane impressa per il vestito che indossa sul red carpet, piuttosto per la sua naturalezza e la sua autenticità. Kirsten non ha mai tentato di apparire perfetta. Ha un naso a patata e le labbra sottili, i denti sono piccoli con un canino sporgente e nemmeno tanto bianchi. Queste sono tutte peculiarità che la rendono unica e diversa, “se avessi un sorriso perfetto avrei lo stesso aspetto di tutte le altre attrici bionde”, commenta l’attrice in un’intervista. Quali sono dunque i motivi che hanno portato Sofia Coppola a sceglierla in due dei suoi quattro film? Cerchiamo di capire.

L’incontro fortunato della carriera di Kirsten è avvenuto nel 1999 quando Sofia l’ha scelta per interpretare Lux Lisbon ne Il Giardino delle Vergini Suicide. Kirsten afferma di essere estremamente fiera di questo primo film girato insieme e ammette di riconoscersi moltissimo in questo personaggio. Come dichiarato dalla stessa attrice, Sofia Coppola è l’unica in grado di mostrarla per quello che è davvero, cosa che la mette a disagio. E lo stesso è successo anche per Maria Antonietta, dove la talentuosa regista l’ha messa davanti a se stessa, alla sua idea sulla delfina di Francia, praticamente senza dialoghi. Tutto proveniva da dentro e dalla libera interpretazione della sua vita.

Maria Antonietta o Lux non sono per niente diverse dalle ragazze d’oggi, sono entrambe sole nel loro piccolo mondo, con nessuno che ha voglia di capirle e con le barriere che altri hanno issato attorno a loro che sembrano sempre strette. La corte di Versailles da una parte, la famiglia bigotta dall’altra. Storie di adolescenti, solitudine, carenza di rapporti umani e affettivi, malinconia e tenerezza, tutte caratteristiche che rispecchiano in pieno l’indole di Kirsten, che ha saputo interpretare in maniera esemplare entrambe le parti per dedizione e resa artistica.

Sofia ha fatto della sua poetica malinconica il punto di forza della sue storie, i suoi film vanno ad indagare l’universo femminile nel suo processo di individuazione, sia che sia quello di una regina vissuta nel XVIII secolo, sia che sia una ragazza vissuta negli anni ’70, perché per lei ciò che conta è raccontare di vite, di sogni e di difficoltà. Sofia ha creato nel film di Marie Antoinette dei parallelismi tra il 18° secolo e i nostri tempi inserendo in una scena le All Star con i nastri al posto dei lacci e utilizzando la superba musica rock-punk per rendere il passaggio dall’adolescenza all’età adulta universale e simile a tutte le epoche. Cambiano gli scenari, gli abiti, le scarpe, lo stile, ma la ragazza di allora assomiglia incredibilmente alla ragazza di oggi.

Kirsten è una delle grandi star del mondo del cinema che incanta tutti grazie a una rara mescolanza di vulnerabilità e forza che mostra nei film in cui recita. Chi meglio di lei, una biondina apparentemente ingenua e delicata ma con un lato oscuro e ribelle, poteva meglio interpretare i personaggi di questi due progetti che hanno in comune il senso di ribellione e la voglia di evadere dal piccolo mondo che le circondano? Sofia è rimasta affascinata proprio dal “lato oscuro” sorprendentemente torbido della Dunst, quel lato del quale molto spesso ci si vergogna e che si tende a celare, ma che Sofia è riuscita a tirarle fuori e grazie ai quali i suoi film sono speciali per delicatezza e intensità.

Oltre alla stima professionale reciproca, Kirsten e Sofia sono anche grandi amiche. Si sono conosciute quando Kirsten aveva 16 anni e si sono ritrovate 7 anni dopo per il secondo film, ma in quel lasso di tempo Kirsten è cresciuta con Sofia sempre vicino, quasi fosse la sua guida spirituale. Loro definiscono la loro amicizia veramente stretta a tal punto che non serve che una delle due parli per far capire all’altra cosa pensa! Forse perché hanno delle cose in comune; entrambe sono state esposte alle telecamere in tenera età, Kirsten lavorando per degli spot pubblicitari all’età di 3 anni, mentre Sofia ha fatto il suo debutto all’età di un mese nel Padrino. Crescere come un’attrice e vivere nel mondo del cinema da un’età molto giovane non è semplice: “Sei sempre fuori dal mondo — fuori dal mondo rispetto alle ragazze della tua età, che non stanno attraversando la stessa cosa, e rispetto agli adulti perché sei ancora una bambina”. Questo sembra averle unite e spiega la loro stupida predisposizione alla depressione! Il loro legame è talmente forte che prendono ispirazione l’una dall’altra. “I suoi film trattano sempre di donne e della loro sfera intima — è molto poetico e bello” dichiara Kirsten. “Ma quello che mi piace di più in Sofia è che non vede in me la bionda graziosa ed esuberante, ma una giovane donna con le sue complessità, un lato triste e talvolta anche pauroso”.

Sono ancora poche le fonti disponibili ma è sicuro che Kirsten comparirà per la terza volta nell’ultimo film di Sofia, The Bling Ring, che racconta la storia di una gang di sei ragazzini della Hollywood-bene che tra il 2008 e il 2009 si divertiva a svaligiare le case delle celebrity. Vittime di questa gang ossessionata dai personaggi famosi sono stati Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Lindsay Lohan, Rachel Bilson e Megan Fox. A marzo di quest’anno sono state scattate le prime foto dal set. A parte i protagonisti, è stata immortalata anche Kirsten che pare avrà solamente una piccola parte. Kirsten non è nella lista delle celebrity che all’epoca sono state derubate, ma si pensa possa interpretare il ruolo di se stessa che viene derubata dalla gang. Per sapere qualcosa di più non rimane altro che aspettare l’uscita del film per scoprire quale ruolo è stato pensato da Sofia per la sua eterna musa.

For sure Kirsten Dunst is not one of those stars that springs to mind when we talk about beauty, glamour, or fashion. She embodies rather an ideal of beauty more similar to the one of the girl next door. Rarely she leaves an impression for her dress worn on the red carpet, but rather for her naturalness and authenticity. Kirsten has never tried to appear perfect. She has a bulbous nose and thinner lips, the teeth are small with a canine that protrudes and they are not even very white. These are all peculiarities that makes her unique and different, “If I had perfect and white teeth I look like all other blonde actresses,” commented the actress in an interview. What are the reasons that brought Sofia Coppola to choose Kirsten Dunst for her films? Try to understand…

The lucky meeting of Kirsten’s career occurred in 1999 when Sofia Coppola chose her to play Lux Lisbon in The Virgin Suicides. Kirsten affirms to be extremely proud of this first movie shot together and she admits to recognizing herself very much in this character. As declared by the same actress, Sofia Coppola is the only one to be able to show herself as she is really, a thing that makes her uncomfortable. And the same happened also for Marie Antoinette, where the talented filmmaker put Kirsten in front of herself, for her idea of the dauphine of France, practically without dialogue. All came from inside and from the free interpretation of her life.

Marie Antoinette and Lux are not different from the girls today, they are both alone in their little word, with no one who wants to understand them and with the barriers that others have hoisted around them that seem always restrictive. The court of Versailles on the one hand, the bigoted family on the other. History of teenagers, loneliness, shortage of human and affective relationships, sadness, and tenderness, all characteristics that reflect the nature of Kirsten, that knew how to play in a exemplary way both the parts with her dedication and her artistic surrender.

Sofia Coppola has made the melancholy poetic of Kirsten Dunst the point of force of her stories, her films investigate the feminine universe in its process of individuation, both in a queen that reigned in the 18th century and in a girl that lived in the ‘70s, because for Sofia the only thing that counts is to tell of lives, of dreams, and of difficulties. Sofia has created in the movie of Marie Antoinette parallelisms between the 18th century and our times, inserting in a scene the Converse All Star with ribbons instead of laces and utilizing magnificent punk rock music to present the passage from adolescence to adulthood as universal and similar in every era. Change the scenes, the dresses, the shoes, the style, but the girl of then looks incredibly like the girl of today.

Kirsten Dunst is one of the big stars of the cinema world, charming all thanks to a rare mixture of vulnerability and strength that shows in the films in which she plays a part. Who better than her, a blonde apparently innocent and delicate but with a dark and rebellious side, to interpret the characters of these two projects that have in common a sense of rebellion and the desire to escape from the little word that surrounds them? Sofia Coppola remained fascinated by the surprisingly cloudy “dark side” of Kirsten Dunst, that side of which very often we are ashamed and we tend to hide, but that Sofia has managed to show and thanks to which her movies are special for the delicacy and the intensity.

In addition to their mutual professional respect, Kirsten and Sofia are also great friends. They met each other when Kirsten was 16 years old and they worked together again seven years later for the second film, but in that period of time Kirsten has grown up with Sofia always nearby, almost as if she was her spiritual guide. They describe their friendship as being very close, with no need to speak to know what the other is thinking! Maybe because they have also things in common; both were exposed to the camera at very young age, Kirsten working in commercials at 3, while Sofia made her debut in The Godfather at one month. Growing up as an actress and living in the cinema world from a very young age was not easy: “You are always out of touch — out of touch with the other girls your age who are not going through the same thing, and with the adults because you are still a child.” This seems to have brought them together and explains their silly predisposition to depression! Their bond is so strong that they take inspiration from one another. “Her movies deal always with women and their intimate sphere — it is very poetic and beautiful.” declares Kirsten. “But the thing I like most in Sofia Coppola is that she doesn’t see in me the gracious and exuberant blonde, but a young woman with her complexes, a sad side and sometimes also scared.”

There are still few available sources but it is certain that Kirsten Dunst will appear for the third time in a film by Sofia Coppola, The Bling Ring, that tells the story of a gang of six boys of Hollywood that between 2008 and 2009 enjoined to burgle the houses of celebrities. Victims of this gang that was obsessed by famous people were Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom, Lindsay Lohan, Rachel Bilson, and Megan Fox. In March of this year the first photos from the set were released and it appears that Kirsten will have only a small part. Although she herself is not on the list of celebrities that were robbed, she could interpret the role of a celebrity that is targeted by the gang. To know something more we will have to attend the release of the movie to discover which role was developed by Sofia Coppola for her eternal muse.
